As we move closer towards a more Automated Future of Human Mobility, we are bestowed with advanced safety tech that only makes the lives of the occupants safer but also ensures the well-being of fellow motorists and pedestrians. Toyota itself has been one of the first few to bring active safety features to their products in the form of Collision Avoidance Technology called the Toyota Safety Sense suite. This tech had made its way to most of Toyota’s lineup and has been constantly evolving to be relevant in the market as one of the more advanced systems.

The 2021 Camry brings with itself the newest iteration of this very system called the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ which features definitive improvements to the prevailing Toyota Technology and also adds certain key features that make the system smarter than ever before.

What is new in the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+?

The newest iteration of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 + makes its debut in the 2021 Toyota Camry and should also be incorporated in other models in the future. The Safety Sense 2.5+ brings some critical advancements to the available suite and all the notable improvements have been mentioned below:

Pre-Collison System

The much improved Pre Collision System on the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ now includes intersection support with pedestrian and cyclist detection. The system is now equipped to detect an oncoming vehicle when you are at an intersection and provide audio and visual cues to prevent a crash. The equipped vehicle can also automatically brake to prevent a crash of any sort or at least lower the impact. The system is also capable of detecting and identifying cyclists in daylight and pedestrians in both daylight and low light situations and alert the driver if required.

Emergency Steering Assist

The Emergency Steering Assist, which is a part of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ enables the equipped vehicle to swerve to avoid a pedestrian, cycle, or another vehicle while staying in its own lane to avert a crash. This also comes in handy to center the vehicle in the lane itself if it feels that the vehicle is deviating from the designated lane.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

The Safety Sense 2.5+ Suite also enables the equipped vehicle to detect an oncoming curve on the road and adjust its speed accordingly to pass the said curve and also stay within the prescribed lane and later on return back to the preset speed. This comes in handy to accommodate a sharp bend without veering out of its lane.

Automatic Overtakes

This integrated feature in the safety Sense 2.5+ helps enable the driver to automatically overtake slower moving traffic without any manual input after indicating the pass. When behind said slow-moving traffic, the driver can indicate a lane change using the indicator stalk, and the car would automatically depart from the present lane into the indicated lane, accelerate to initiate the pass, indicate to merge back into the original lane and complete the overtake by returning to its original lane.

The already present features such as the Blind Spot Monitoring System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Automatic High Beams have also been given a tune-up to increase their efficiency and the overall effectiveness of the present systems. The updated system should prove to be a great selling point for the 2021 Toyota Camry and the fact that the newer system puts emphasis on pedestrian and fellow motorist safety is a great step towards safer roads!

How does it work?

The Toyota Safety Sense Suite utilizes an on-board camera mounted alongside the Inside Rear-View Mirror with a Grille mounted Radar system that utilizes a millimeter-wave to help run the active safety features onboard the equipped Toyota products. Some of the techs that are embodied in the Toyota Safety Sense system is as follows:

Pre-Collison System

The Pre-Collision system on the Toyota Safety Sense uses the available hardware i.e. the camera and radar to scan the road ahead of the vehicle for potential obstacles and alert the driver if it senses that the on-coming obstacles pose a crash threat. The vehicle on this suspicion can provide audiovisual clues to the driver thereby alerting him of the impending danger and if need be(in equipped models) automatically bring the car to a halt to prevent the crash.

Lane Departure Alert

The Lane Departure System on the Toyota Safety Sense Suite utilizes the available camera to scan the road for dedicated lane markings to ascertain the position of the vehicle with respect to the road. In case the system detects that the vehicle is deviating from the lane without proper turn signal indication it can provide audio and visual warnings for the driver to re-center the vehicle and in certain scenarios also reel the car back into the lane itself.

Automatic High Beam

The Automatic High Beam on the Toyota Safety Sense system utilizes the camera on-board to scan for oncoming vehicle headlights and the taillights of the vehicles being trailed to automatically toggle between the high and low beams of the equipped Toyota vehicle to prevent unnecessary glare on the other vehicles plying on the road and also provide maximum illumination for the equipped vehicle at all times. The system is also smart enough to monitor the illumination provided by streetlights to adjust the intensity of the headlights accordingly.

Road Sign Assist

The Safety Sense system utilizes the onboard camera of an equipped Toyota vehicle to scan for available road signs while the vehicle is under motion and displays the recognized road signs on the available TFT display in the gauge cluster to keep the driver informed of the limitations such as overtaking restrictions and speed limits. It also provides audiovisual warnings to the driver if the vehicle senses that a Road Sign Warning is being violated by the driver.

Adaptive Cruise Control

The Adaptive Cruise Control system of the Toyota Safety Sense Suite utilizes the millimeter-wave radar onboard the equipped vehicle to maintain a minimum preset distance to the vehicle plying in front of it and can also automatically accelerate or retard the equipped vehicle to maintain the said distance and cruising speed.
